What does “customary marriage” mean, and is it legal?

Customary marriages, conducted according to indigenous African customs, are recognised as legal marriages if they comply with the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act: the marriage must be negotiated, entered into, or celebrated in accordance with customary law, and both parties must be 18 years or older. Registration is recommended but not mandatory for validity.
